Slugging operates on a unique set of etiquette guidelines that have developed over time. While there is no official enforcement, following these courtesies ensures a safe, smooth, and respectful experience for both drivers and riders.
General Guidelines
- First Come, First Served – The first person in line gets the next available ride and may choose a seat. Riders should not take a ride out of turn unless specifically called (see “Will Call”).
- Minimal Conversation – Slugging is generally a quiet commute. While conversation may occur, it is best to let the driver initiate.
- Avoid Sensitive Topics – Discussions about religion, politics, or personal matters should be avoided.
- No Exchange of Money or Gifts – Drivers and riders participate in slugging as mutually beneficial arrangement. No compensation is expected or required.
- Mobile Phone Use – Brief calls such as “I’m on my way home” are acceptable, but extended conversations should be avoided. If listening to music or watching media, use headphones and keep the volume low.
- Safety in the Line – if a woman would be left standing alone in line, riders should adjust accordingly to ensure n o one is left behind, especially at night.
- No Smoking or Eating – To maintain a comfortable ride for all, neither drivers nor riders should smoke or eat during the commute.
- Respect the Driver’s Preferences – Riders can ask to adjust the volume, temperature, or windows—but always ask first and respect the driver’s response. If the answer is no, don’t ask again.
Ride Expectations
- Safe Ride – Riders want to arrive safety, Drivers should follow the flow of traffic and obey speed limits. Avoid weaving through lanes and tailgating.
- Courtesy Matters – A simple “thank you” before and after the ride is a common courtesy.
- No Curbside Service – Riders should confirm the drop-off point in advance and not expect detours or special stops.
- Right to Decline a Ride – Both drivers and riders have the right to decline a ride if they feel unsafe or uncomfortable.
- No “Body Snatching” – Drivers should pick up riders from the designated line. DO NOT pick up riders on the main road–pull into a parking lot and use the designated pickup point.
- Commit to the Agreed Destination – Drivers should take riders to the agreed-upon drop-off location unless discussed beforehand.
- “Will Call” Selection – Drivers may occasionally pick up someone they know from the line, but this is at their discretion.
- Seat Belts Required – Both drivers and riders should buckle up before leaving.
- Consideration for Others – Drivers should keep their cars reasonably clean, avoid strong scents, and keep music moderate.
- Personal Grooming – Activities like applying makeup or combing hair should be avoided during the ride.
Slugging may be an informal system, but it thrives on mutual respect and cooperation, allowing commuters to travel efficiently while maintaining a positive experience for everyone.
